WARRINGTON Town have signed former Leeds and Hartlepool United striker Billy Paynter.
Paynter, 33, scored 17 goals in 53 games in League Two for Hartlepool and made 27 appearances for Leeds between 2010 and 2012.
He started his career at Port Vale and has played for a number of Football League clubs including Hull, Southend, Swindon, Doncaster and Carlisle.
The Liverpudlian goes straight in to contention for Tuesday night’s FA Trophy third qualifying round replay against Tamworth.
Yellows chairman Toby Macormac said: “I’m pleased that we’re able to attract experienced players like Billy and Steve Jennings (a recent signing from Southport) to the club to add to the competitive squad we already have.
“With the busy Christmas period coming up, it’s important that we continue to strengthen the squad.”
Paynter has been training with National League sides AFC Fylde and Southport since being released by Hartlepool in the summer.
The Yellows have made another signing in the shape of Desire Simson, who came off the bench to make a brief debut in the 2-2 draw at Tamworth on Saturday.
The 21-year-old winger, who hails from Rotterdam in the Netherlands, made a handful of appearances for the club’s reserve side earlier this season.
Boss Paul Carden is also close to making two further signings to bolster the squad.
However, a recently announced loan deal for Tranmere winger Elliot Rokka has failed to materialise due to the injury crisis at Prenton Park which also saw them recall centre-half Evan Gumbs from Cantilever Park.
Gumbs played the full 90 minutes as Tranmere beat Maidstone United 4-0 in the National League on Saturday.
It was also confirmed on Saturday that the Yellows have released Aboubacar Sanogo.
