Lucky escape for young swan

2

A YOUNG swan had a lucky escape after taking a wrong turn and ending up on a busy road next to Ackers Pit at Stockton Heath, Warrington.

The cygnet, which is currently practicing to fly, became separated from its family and ended up stuck in the middle of Ackers Road, causing vehicles to swerve to avoid it.

Fortunately passerby Karen Dutton, and warrington-worldwide Editor Gary Skentelbery, who was driving into town, came to the rescue and escorted the bird back to Ackers Pit.

There was one scary moment when the bird took off again, flying at a low level head on with an oncoming car! Out of breath it crash landed in the middle of the carriageway  bringing traffic to a standstill.

Using his coat, Gary guided the bird back to the pavement and assisted by Karen got the bird back to safety.

“I’m not sure what would have happened to the bird if it hadn’t been for Karen and myself as a number of motorists swerved around it and continued on their journey, instead of stopping to assist.

“The young bird was clearly distressed and needed assistance. It took about 10 minutes to get the bird back to the safety of the water – but even though it made me late for a meeting, it was well worth it.”

  1. Aww a HUGE well done to you both Gary & Karen 😀
That is one very lucky cygnet by the sounds of it and lucky that you two were driving that way and willing to help it when other clearly couldn’t be bothered.

I hope it didn’t hurt itself when it crash landed on the carriageway, poor thing 🙁
