Students’ money management warning

AROUND 1,406 people in Warrington are expected to leave for university this summer, according to a new estimate from a national charity.
Financial education charity pfeg – Personal Finance Education Group – is urging parents in Warrington to speak to their children about how they plan to manage their money.
They should seize a “last chance” to discuss with their children how they will manage their student finances, in a bid to prevent them falling into financial difficulty.
A total of 1,365 people in the Warrington local authority area accepted university places last September,
According to information obtained from university admissions service UCAS, it is expected there will be a three percent rise in applications this year.
The charity, which offers free financial education resources and support to schools in Warrington and the local area, says that parents have a key role to play in teaching their children about how to manage their money at university.
Tracey Bleakley, pfeg chief executive, said: “It is really important that parents in Warrington seize this last chance to sit down with their
children before they go off to university and help them think ahead to how they are going to manage their student finances. For most new students, university is the first time they will have managed their own money – and it’s crucial that they know how to make their first student loan last the entire term.
“The government-backed Money Advice Service’s guide, ‘Managing money as a student’, is a great place for parents and university-goers to start.
“In the longer term, we need to ensure that financial education is taught in all schools in Warrington and across the UK, to equip school-leavers with the skills they need to manage their money as they enter adult life. This is crucial for all young people, whether they are going into university, college or straight into the world of work. I would strongly encourage any school in Warrington interested in helping their pupils learn more about money to come to pfeg for free advice and support.”
