Ex-councillor to fight by-election

THE Liberal Democrats have selected former borough councillor Colin Oliver to fight a by-election in the Poulton North ward on July 28.
Mr Oliver (pictured) – who is also the chairman of Poulton-with-Fearnhead Parish Council – lost his seat to Labour at the council elections in May, after an acrimonious campaign.
The by-election – reported by warrington-worldwide last week – follows the resignation of Liberal Democrat councillor Sharon Wilson, who is leaving the area because of work commitments.
Liberal Democrat leader Cllr Ian Marks said: “We are all very sorry to see Sharon go. She has been an excellent councillor for Poulton North and helped a large number of people with their problems.
She was also a very valued member of the executive board and had the role of looking after service to customers. She championed putting customers at the heart of everything we do and was very popular with the staff in places like the Contact Centre.
“Colin Oliver was a colleague of Sharon’s on the borough council but sadly lost his seat last May. Colin worked unbelievably hard for his constituents and achieved a great deal. It would be wonderful to have him back on the council.”

  1. Good luck to Sharon. I was amazed when Colin lost his seat because he was a true Community Councillor. Good luck to him in the election as he is one of the few councillors who has his priorities right.

  2. How come he lost his seat then ? (sorry not meant to sound awful as I’ve read a lot of good comments about him and his work…. I just wondered)

  3. Colin should never have lost his sear in May. He was – and will be – exactly what the residents of Poulton need from a local councillor. Hard working, engaged, experienced, know his ward inside out. Let’s hope the residents don’t squander an opportunity this time.

  4. Says who? If he was such an amazing Councillor why did he lose his seat in May? He obviously can’t take the hint. We’ll see, again, what the electorate in general in Poulton North think in July.

  5. In fact, what will happen is that he will either win or lose depending not on his local record but on what the public thinks of his party’s performance nationally. That was what happened in May and it is what always happens.

  6. Sad but true and it is unfortunate, I think, that party politics is so dominant in local government. As I understand the system there in Warrington, the same seat will be up for election again next May, so if Mr Oliver is not successful in July, he can have a go again then, when maybe his party is less unpopular, or when the new Labour Administration that you have has not lived up to people’s expectations.

  7. Dizzy. I was asking that question today in Fearnhead, and it seems that people voted nationally because of Clegg.

What London and Local Politics have in common I will never understand.
