MP welcomes cash boost for potholes

WARRINGTON South MP David Mowat – who some years ago went out and repaired a pot hole when he was a prospective Parliament candidate – has welcomed the Government’s decision to make an extra £100 million available nationally to repair road damage caused by winter weather.
He believes the extra money – when added to the £500,000 Warrington is making available for pot hole repairs next year – will enable the borough council to make a “real difference” to the condition of local roads.
Mr Mowat, (pictured) said the terrible weather earlier in the winter caused terrible damage to a lot of local roads.
The Government’s move had been welcomed by the AA, who estimated it could be used to repair 1.5 million potholes. It is in addition to £831 million already provided to councils for road maintenance this year and £30 billion of transport infrastructure spending over the next four years.
Mr Mowat said Warrington now had the opportunity to bid for additional money from the government’s fund.
He said: “Two harsh winters have taken a severe toll on Warrington’s roads. I’ve lost count of the number of constituents who have complained about potholes damaging their vehicles – Birchdale Road in Appleton seems to be particularly bad.
“I am delighted that the council has already set aside half a million for investment in our town’s road network. This additional money should make a real difference in Warrington to the huge number of drivers and cyclists who are fed up with having to continually battle against dangerous potholes, giving them safer and smoother journeys.”
*During his campaign to become the Warrington South MP, Mr Mowat, on receiving a complaint from a resident about a large pothole, went out and repaired it himself.

  1. And whilst he was out fiddling around with potholes as a novel way to gain himself publicity, Stockton Heath Primary a fantastic heritage building delivering Ofsted rated ‘excellent’ education was demolished and replaced with a sub-standard building delivering sub-standard education. Ackers Pit was offloaded onto the Anglers, the Forge Machinery was lost, the public toilets were closed, and his mates in the town hall were hatching ‘behind closed door’ plans to give away Walton Hall and Gardens.

  2. Cant argue with you on the points raised, but the south of warringtons roads have been bady neglected over the last decade and some need urgent repair , especially parts of Lymm , where can i remind you the leader of WBC resides

  3. Money has just been wasted removing white lines and then re-painting them following dips into the potholes etc. on Higher Lane. Also a 40 signpost has been erected in the middle of the width of the pavement making it extremely difficult to pass with a wheelchair or pram. Maybe more money will be wasted dropping the edge of the pavement to allow such wheelchairs etc to more easily access the very busy A56 road in order to pass this post!!! Moving the post nearer to the wall would be a much more sensible option!! This is the only pavement available to pedestrians on this section of Higher Lane as there are fields on the opposite side of the road and therefore no pavement there. Accidents are just waiting to happen, especially after dark.
