Beware the festive thieves

HOUSEHOLDERS in Warrington are being warned to be on guard for thieves and burglars during the festive season.
During the past few months there has been an increase in the number of burglaries reported in the Warrington South area.
Most have involved thieves who have used insecure windows and doors as an excuse to sneak into homes and steal valuables from inside.
Two special events are being organised to help reduce the number of incidents – The Burglary Days of Action are tomorrow (Wednesday) and Friday (December 11) between 9am and 4pm.
Cheshire Police’s exhibition vehicle will be in the car park of Morrison’s on Wednesday and at the Davies Way car park in Lymm on Friday.
Residents can speak to officers and pick up a leaflets containing information about home and vehicle security.
Sergeant Jackie Gee said: “We have seen an increase in the number of sneak-in burglaries in the area and we are urging all residents to be on their guard and to assess their current security measures around the home.
“Many thieves are opportunistic and are looking for an unlocked window or door that will allow them access to a property. Our advice would be to keep all windows and doors locked and secure at all times – even when you are at home. If you need to keep a window or door open then make sure you use the settings, which enable them to be open slightly but are still locked.”
Patrols have been stepped up in “hot spot” areas across Warrington South and officers have been talking to neighbours and giving crime reduction advice.
Thefts from vehicles in the area have also increased and drivers are advised to ensure their vehicle is locked while unattended – even if it is only for a few seconds.
Sgt Gee said: “Make sure all valuable items – including laptops, stereos and sat navs – are removed from your vehicle before you leave it unattended.
“This advice is particularly timely at the moment as many residents will be out and about Christmas shopping and the temptation will be there to leave bags full of expensive gifts on the back seat of the car while you nip back to the shops to get something else. The advice is simple – don’t leave anything at all on show inside your vehicle – otherwise you could end up paying the price.”
