Wolves breeze through in Challenge Cup

WARRINGTON Wolves breezed in to the quarter-finals of the Challenge Cup with a 70-10 win over Championship side Oldham.

The Wolves ran in 13 tries at Bower Fold having paid their part-time opponents the ultimate respect in playing a full strength side.

Oldham, who produced one of the biggest shocks ever by knocking out Super League side Hull KR in the last round, only earned promotion to the Championship last season.

Though given no chance of a repeat performance against the Super League leaders, the Roughyeds did take an early lead through Michael Ward after seven minutes.

Oldham’s brave resolve ended on 16 minutes when Chris Hill forced his way over under pressure from a handful of defenders to get the Wolves on the board, converted by Kurt Gidley for 6-6.

Unlike expected, that didn’t cause the floodgates to open and it took until the half hour mark for Warrington to take the lead for the first time, Ben Julien crossing for a try after neat hands by Ben Currie and Gene Ormsby.

Quick fire tries from Currie and Rhys Evans in the lead up to half time ended the game as a contest though, as Warrington went in 22-6 at half time.

It was always going to be a case of how many in the second half, especially after the Wolves kept the ball alive to register a try within a minute of the restart through George King.

That triggered a prolific opening six minutes for King, who bagged a hat-trick of tries in quick succession, Gidley adding two conversions to stretch the score out to 38-6.

An Ormsby brace and a second for Currie saw the Wolves past 50 and then debutant Morgan Smith got in on the act with a try on 68 minutes.

Perhaps fittingly, given their first half endeavours, it was Oldham who got the final score, Gareth Owen adding their second try on the hooter to round off the scoring.
