MP says town’s Hydrogen sector can help create a true Northern Powerhouse

WARRINGTON North MP Charlotte Nichols chaired a fringe panel at Labour’s virtual conference “Connected” discussing the role of hydrogen in a green economic recovery.

The event was hosted by the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Hydrogen, of which Ms Nichols is an officer. In the APPG as well as on the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Select Committee She has been working hard since her election in December to promote local industries, protecting jobs in Warrington and creating more opportunities in the jobs and apprenticeships of the future.
Ms Nichols said: “In Warrington North we have almost four and a half thousand workers in civil nuclear and the great number of synergies between nuclear and hydrogen present us with many opportunities.
“If the Government is serious about its levelling up agenda and creating a true ‘Northern Powerhouse ’then they need to look no further than the Hydrogen sector.
“From hydrogen for heating right through to Airbus ’plans for a new generation of full-size hydrogen-powered jets that could mean zero-emissions flights within 15 years, and the thousands of jobs that could be created and supported across our country, today’s discussion couldn’t have been more timely as we face the twin challenges of the climate emergency and our post-pandemic economy.’
