MP takes on chairmanship of Light Rail Group

CAMPAIGN group TramForward have congratulated Warrington South MP Andy Carter on taking up the Chairmanship of the All Party Parliamentary Light Rail Group (APPLRG).

APPLRG is an independent forum for MPs and Peers from all political parties whose object is to encourage, promote and develop light rail, trams and environs and its benefits as a mode of transport.

The Group holds regular meetings, which are attended by representatives of industry, local government,. as well as organising study tours for its members.

Among APPLRG’s current interests are promoting the wider use of trams to improve urban air quality, particularly in the reduction of non-exhaust emissions (NEE), development of low-cost tram systems, supporting tram and light rail developments in a number of towns and cities and developing (with the LRTA) the Tram Tracker information tool.

Andy Carter was elected as MP for Warrington South in the 2019 general election. He was previously Group Managing Director of Manchester-based GMG Radio before the group was taken over by Global Radio in 2014. After leaving radio he worked in a family business and ran a consultancy firm.

Other officers of APPLRG are Stephen Metcalfe MP (Vice Chair), Stephen Hammond MP and Baroness Randerson (Co – Secretaries) and Clive Betts MP (Treasurer). The Group Secretariat is provided by Jim Harkins who is also Chairman of the Light Rail Transit Association Campaigns Group
