A Warrington youngster is swimming the equivalent of the English Channel to help raise funds for the disability charity set up in the town by her grandad.

Between now and March 21 Ellie Thompson is planning to swim 22 miles-the length of the English Channel, in her local swimming pool.

Ellie said: “I am doing this because I want to raise money for Warrington Disability Partnership (WDP) to help disabled people in Warrington.

“My grandad started this charity and I am very proud to be involved. My final mile will be on 21st March at the WDP sponsored swim at Great Sankey Neighbourhood hub!”

Warrington Disability Partnership was a charity set up by Dave Thompson after he broke his neck in a freak sporting accident while playing American Football for the Warrington Scorpions.

The charity that aims to help remove the social barriers faced by disabled people, their families or carers and to support their independence throughout work and life.

It offers disabled people services from: help and advice on Direct Payments to finding gainful employment, showrooms with the latest enabling equipment, free wheelchair loans, Sports Leisure & Recreation, a town centre Shopmobility scheme, opportunities to volunteer, a ‘Discover IT’ suite, an accessible holiday home in North Wales to even offering free day trips on their wheelchair accessible narrow boat ‘Wizard’!
