Lymm's winning run continues

LYMM Rugby Union Club continued their winning form without really moving out of second gear.
Lymm replaced the unavailable Warrington with Broadbent, Lee Pickles took the 5 shirt from the absent Calderbank, Bates was benched as front row cover and Matthew Barnes Smith was placed on the bench after a year of back problems.
In sun drenched conditions on the narrowest pitch in the league, Wilmslow opened the scoring after 9 mins after a Lymm offside. Knowles equalised on 18 but Lymm’s poor discipline began to cost dearly with 2 more Wilmslow penalties from Mccallum on 21 and 24 mins made it 9-3 for the home side.
With both sides struggling to obtain any real platform, especially at the line out, and both defences working effectively, it was always going to be a random error or sublime skill that would move the game forward. A Chris Griffiths try on 30 mins, after Fletcher and Johnstone interchanged from their own 22 delivered the skill and on 34 minutes a pantomime interception allowed Wilmslow to score an unconverted try. Knowles notched a penalty on the stroke of half time to make it 14-13 at the break.
Alex Gluth replaced Scott Harrison at half time. Scott had a game to forget but everyone can have a bad day and he will be back next time with all guns blazing.
The penalties flowed with five in the first 5 mins after the restart. Lymm will consider themselves lucky that Mccullum didn’t hit the target on 54. It allowed Lymm to reshape and, again, great handling skills from man of the match contender Pickles, allowed Butler to score under the posts. Knowles converted to give Lymm the lead at 14-20.
Knowles was successful again on 62 with a penalty to take his own haul to 13 for the game to complete the scoring.
Not even a Higginson sin bin on 78 was enough to allow the home team back.
Coach Kinsey felt that the “win was despite a performance well below our potential and we will have to address our errors to build constructively.”
Assistant coach Pickles felt it was “another determined performance and winning is a habit that Lymm weren’t going to kick easily.”
Lymm entertain New Brighton on Saturday for their opening home game of the new season knowing that they will need to improve their discipline to retain the possession against the powerful visiting pack.
