Villagers urged to support road safety scheme

RESIDENTS of Croft are being urged to add their support to calls for a traffic management scheme at a critical junction in the village.
Local borough councillors Matt Smith, Joan Grime and Jan Davidson have joined Warrington North Labour Parliamentary candidate Helen Jones  (pictured) in a drive to introduce a scheme at the junction of Lord Street and Heath Lane.
Ms Jones said: “The junction of Lord Street and Heath Lane is recognised throughout Culcheth and Croft as an area which has seen so many ‘near misses’.
“Some of these are due to speeding vehicles, others simply because visibility at the bend can sometimes be reduced.”
Although funding for such schemes is limited because of government cuts, it may be available at Croft for a scheme that would slow down traffic and help improve highway safety.
Ms Jones added: “In order to secure the funding, we must demonstrate that there is considerable public support via a petition to the council. That is why I am joining Matt, Joan and Jan in launching a petitionfor Croft, to help collect that support from local people. If we can demonstrate that there is a strong desire in the village to see traffic calming measures introduced on the junction of Heath Lane and Lord Street, then this will be a significant step forward in delivering improvements to this area.”
A letter and petition forms have already been distributed in Croft, but residents can also add their names by emailing Cllr Smith at [email protected]

  1. Traffic schemes and pedestrian crossings popping up all over Culcheth it would appear right now. Well, let’s just look at the facts first. They are not actually appearing right now but they may possibly appear in the pipeline? At some distant date? Down the line? If there actually is any money set aside for this? Which I would guess is possibly doubtful? But don’t let that get in the way of a good news story for Helen. Credit where it’s due though, it’s good to see her giving a nod to local councillors (even though she tends to in her Culcheth base) but she could do with extending this to other councillors in other areas of her constituency. But not the ones that work for her. If she can do that then I might start to believe that miracles can and do occur. But right now I’d have to bracket these investment claims in the same ‘it will be a miracle’category.
