A WARRINGTON cancer survivor has helped to take the fight against the disease from the science lab to the boxing ring.
Kasia Turner, aged 33, from Great Sankey, has helped Cancer Research UK smash through the £5 million mark.
Ultra White Collar Boxing (UWCB) events take place in 90 towns and cities across the UK giving people with no boxing experience the opportunity to train as a boxer in a safe and enjoyable environment, while raising money for Cancer Research UK.
Last year more than 10,000 people signed up to the challenge and so far this year around 7,500 people have taken part with each participant receiving eight weeks training at a local partner gym with professional boxing coaches, completely free.
At the end of the training participants are matched with an opponent from the group to take part in a competitive three round bout at a black tie event in front of hundreds of supporters.
UWCB participants across the country are helping to raise between £7,000 and £12,000 a day on JustGiving for Cancer Research UK, many with their own personal motivation for raising money and getting fit.
Kasia, who works for Eddie Stobart, was inspired to get involved after being diagnosed with breast cancer aged just 30 in 2013. She also lost her mum, both grandmothers and an aunt to the disease.
Following diagnosis, she underwent six months of chemotherapy treatment followed by surgery and five weeks of daily radiotherapy. She will receive hormone treatment for the next five years.
Both she and her husband took part in UWCB and found it an overwhelmingly positive experience.
She said: “I have always taken part in Race for Life 10k events. But this year I wanted a different challenge, to test myself and prove I am capable of doing anything.
“My fight was an amazing experience and even though I lost I’m very proud of myself that I lasted all three rounds. The atmosphere and the cheering crowd were incredible. I would recommend this to anyone and have to say it was by far the best experience of my life!”
UWCB, which was founded in 2009, began fundraising for the charity in 2013 and is now on course to raise £10 million by the end of next yhear and have 350 events taking place in 100 different cities across the UK.
