HIGHWAY planners are proposing to install a new toucan crossing on Sankey Way at Great Sankey, Warrington, to improve walking and cycling links and provide safer access to Sankey Valley Park.
The proposed crossing would span both carriageways of the A57 Sankey Way, between Cromwell Avenue and Sankey Roundabout/Lovely Lane.
According to the council’s statement of reasons, the scheme is intended to support additional active travel movements and reduce the separation between residential areas to the north and south of the busy road.
The crossing would also improve connections to existing walking and cycling routes, including routes towards Warrington town centre.
Toucan crossings are designed for both pedestrians and cyclists, allowing both to cross the road using the same signal-controlled facility.
The council says the scheme could encourage more people to walk and cycle for leisure and everyday journeys, potentially reducing reliance on cars while delivering health benefits and lowering environmental impacts.
The proposed locations are:
– Eastbound carriageway: approximately 283 metres east of the junction with Cromwell Avenue.
– Westbound carriageway: approximately 296 metres east of its junction with Cromwell Avenue South.
The proposals are being brought forward under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, with the council publishing a formal notice of its intention to establish the crossing.
Residents, businesses and other interested parties can submit representations in support of or opposition to the proposals.
The deadline for representations is Thursday, November 19, 2026.
