FOR a generation of Warrington music lovers, Casi was far more than a nightclub. It was a place to belong – and now the spirit of the legendary Mersey Street venue is being brought back for one special night.
On Friday, September 25, Warrington’s alternative music scene will turn the clock back as Asylum Club Night joins forces with Casi for a special reunion at Brickhaus.
It promises to be a nostalgic night for anyone who remembers the days when the Mersey Street venue was at the heart of Warrington’s rock, metal and alternative scene.
Casi closed its doors in 2013, but more than a decade later its influence can still be felt among the city’s alternative music community.
And while the old Mersey Street building has been transformed almost beyond recognition into apartments, the memories of what happened inside have certainly not disappeared.
For many, Casi was where friendships were forged, bands were discovered and people who perhaps felt they didn’t quite fit in elsewhere could simply be themselves.
Casi wasn’t just a club – it was a place where all the Moshers, Emo’s and Scene kids could be who they wanted to be,” said Asylum DJ Kirsty.
“The place was more than just a run down building, it was our home, a place where many of us made friends for life.”
The **Casi X Asylum reunion special** will feature more than two hours of alternative classics from back in the day, alongside special guests and a collection of old photographs being shown throughout the night on screens around Brickhaus.
For those who were there, it promises to be as much a trip down memory lane as it is a night out.
Casi may have been rough around the edges, but that was arguably part of its charm.
Lee Harman, founder of Asylum, believes the club deserves its place in Warrington’s musical history.
“Casi was certainly a little rough around the edges but often is now remembered just as fondly as the likes of Mr Smiths and the Carlton Club,” he said.
“It was a huge part of the alternative scene in Warrington, and it’s amazing to be able to bring a little bit of that back for one night.”
From Casi to Asylum
In many ways, Asylum represents the next generation of the same Warrington alternative music tradition.
Originally launched in 2021 and relaunched in July 2021, the club night has established itself as one of the town’s biggest alternative nights, attracting special guests including DJ sets from members of You Me At Six and Funeral For A Friend.
Members of the Asylum team have also gone on to play at major festivals, including Slam Dunk and Download.
And in July this year, Asylum returned to its original home in Barbauld Street, adding another chapter to a story which began with a generation of Warrington clubbers looking for somewhere to call their own.
Now the two generations are coming together.
“If Asylum can leave half the legacy Casi has, we’ve done our job right,” said Lee.
The reunion is likely to be a particularly poignant occasion for those who remember Casi at its peak.
The fashions may have changed. The building certainly has.
But the music, friendships and memories created there remain firmly embedded in the memories of those who lived through Warrington’s alternative club scene.
And for one night, at least, Casi and Asylum will share the same stage – bringing together the past and present of Warrington’s alternative music scene.
