VISITORS to the Museum of Policing in Cheshire, based at Warrington Police Station, have shown their support for the police following the tragic deaths of two officers killed in Cleveland recently.
The museum held an open day on Tuesday, but on this occasion, volunteers decided to put aside their usual appeal for donations to museum funds and instead raise money for Constables Matthew Blades and Thomas Clough.
Photographs of the two officers were displayed at the museum, with visitors also taking the opportunity to discuss the tragedy and share their thoughts with museum volunteers.
Their generosity raised £300 in cash, while further visitors made donations through the JustGiving appeal set up following the officers’ deaths.
Museum volunteer and manager Pete Hampson said visitors had been united in their support for the police and their sorrow at the loss of the two officers.
He said: “All police deaths in whatever circumstances have an impact on the wider BLUE FAMILY. But this one has had the greatest impact we can remember for a long time.”
Pete added: “We are all deeply hurting. It is heartwarming to hear the supportive comments from the public and to experience their generosity.”
The museum team thanked everyone who attended the open day and contributed to the appeal.
Pete added: “We would like to thank all our visitors for their generosity.”
The deaths have sent shockwaves through the policing community, with colleagues and members of the public paying tribute to the two officers.
For those at the Museum of Policing in Cheshire, Tuesday’s open day provided an opportunity not only to remember Matthew and Thomas, but also to demonstrate the strong bond between police officers, their families, colleagues and the communities they serve.
Concluding his tribute, Pete said simply:“Tom and Matthew, REST IN PEACE.”
