PREPARATIONS are being made to celebrate the 200th anniversary of St Matthew’s Church, Stretton.

The cornerstone was laid at the church 200 years ago in November and parishioners plan to continue with special events during the following 12 months until the bicentenary of the consecration of the church in November 1827.

Linda Buckly, a Reader and member of the Parochial Church Council, said: “We are currently in vacancy – we have no vicar, due to retirement, but are continuing ‘as normal.’
“This year in November we celebrate 200 years of the cornerstone being laid at St Matthew’s and intend to continue with events during the 12 months until we celebrate 200 years since the consecration in November 1827.”
Among the events planned are a “200 years ago in school” day in St Matthew’s School this November, a Christmas Tree Festival, special days celebrating the weddings and baptisms that have taken place at St Matthew’s, an event to celebrate the parish Walking Days in July next year and, in September 2027 an event to mark the history of the church.

It is also hoped to arrange an event around the old vicarage – which is now the Park Royal Hotel.
Linda said: “We want to engage with the local community – so many people have connections with the church and school through photos, stories and memories
“We would also like to raise some funds but this is not the main purpose.”
The church hopes to make contact with all members of the public in Stretton – including local people who have moved away from the area.
