A new training course designed to help adults support the mental wellbeing of young people is set to take place at Priestley College, Warrington, this summer.
The Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course, aimed at those working with young people aged eight to 18, will provide practical skills to recognise and respond to mental health challenges.
Course leader Paul Mackinnon said the training is about giving adults the confidence to step in when it matters most.
“This course is about helping people feel prepared,” he said. “Many adults are already in positions where they can make a real difference – they just need the tools and confidence to act.”
The programme is particularly suited to those involved in community organisations, local businesses, and youth groups, where supporting young people is often part of everyday interactions.
Delivered by MHFA England, the course focuses on building awareness and practical response skills. Participants will learn how to identify early signs of mental health difficulties, approach sensitive conversations, and respond appropriately in more serious situations.
“We focus on recognising the early warning signs and creating supportive conversations,” said Paul. “It’s not about being an expert – it’s about being approachable and understanding.”
Alongside his role as a trainer, Paul teaches at Priestley College, giving him direct insight into the challenges faced by young people today.
“Working with students every day, you see just how important early support can be,” he said. “Young people are dealing with a lot and having someone who notices and listens can make a huge difference.”
Organisers say the course is designed to be accessible, with no prior experience required.
“You don’t need any specialist background to take part,” said Paul. “It’s about building understanding in a supportive environment so people feel ready to help.”
With mental health concerns among young people on the rise, the training aims to empower those in key roles to provide early support and guidance.
The course will run over four weeks from Tuesday, June 2, between 6pm and 9pm at Priestley College. The reduced course fee is £150. Please email adultsenrol@priestley.ac.uk
