Popular Plaice Station set to close after nearly two decades

THE Popular Plaice Station fish and chip shop based at Padgate Railway Station is set to close after nearly two decades due to rising costs, declaring that “Fish & Chips” is facing its biggest battle.

Other factors include reduced fishing quotas and political issues around the world, and demands on VAT, which are effectively destroying any profit margins.
But it won’t be the end with plans to bounce back with another “real food first outfit,” first started by Quaker Coffee.

Owner Darren Sudlow took to social media to make the announcement stating: “It is with extreme mixed emotions that we officially announce the permanent closure of The Plaice Station.
“After 19 years, we will be closing down with our last service on Friday, 17th April.
“The decision hasn’t come lightly. It comes after increasing pressure in the sector – soaring fish prices, reduced fishing quotas and political issues around the world, relentless demands on VAT amongst other ever increasing expenses, effectively destroying any profit margins remaining. Truth is the product of Fish & Chips itself is facing its toughest battle. Being left behind in the battle in cost of living and no longer being the trademark “cheap as chips”.
“With darkness shows light. The business will rejuvenate, rebrand, and come back stronger. We have fantastic plans to continue the work started by Quaker Coffee to have a real food first outfit here in Padgate. We aim to be at the forefront of the growing food scene here in Warrington and can’t wait to open the next chapter with you.
“We would like to thank everyone who has helped us along the way. Our employees of past and present, we couldn’t have done it without you. Friends, family, suppliers and of course the community surrounding us as well.
“It’s not the end, but the start of a new beginning.
“With love always, and many thanks to you all.”
