RESIDENTS of Warrington are being warned that wood burning stoves can harm their health, wallet and the environment.
The borough council is urging residents to consider the serious health, environmental and financial impacts of using wood burning stoves, as new evidence highlights the growing risks associated with domestic burning.
While wood burners may seem like a cosy and cost-effective way to heat your home, the reality is far more damaging.
Burning wood releases harmful small particle air pollution (PM2.5), which can worsen respiratory and cardiovascular conditions, particularly affecting children, older people, and those with existing health issues. Even the newest, most efficient stoves can triple indoor pollution levels compared to homes without them.
Wood burners are also more expensive than other heating options. A newly installed stove used for 80 per cent of a home’s heating can cost up to 50 per cent more annually than a gas boiler.
Cllr Tony Higgins, the council’s cabinet member for climate change, sustainability and the environment, said: “We understand that many people enjoy the aesthetic of a wood burning stove, but the evidence is clear – burning wood harms our health, our neighbours, and our environment. In Warrington, we’re working hard to improve air quality, and we all have a role to play. If you must burn, please do so responsibly and legally. Better still, consider cleaner, safer alternatives.”
The council receives 20 – 30 complaints each year about emissions from wood burning stoves affecting neighbours. Most of Warrington is a designated Smoke Control Area, meaning it is an offence to emit smoke from a chimney, unless using authorised fuel or a Defra-approved appliance. Offenders risk fines of up to £1,000.
If you choose to use a wood burning stove:
Only burn dry wood with less than 20 per cent moisture
* Never burn wet, painted or treated wood
* Clean chimneys annually and follow manufacturer instructions
* Be considerate of neighbours – let them know when you plan to use your wood burning stove
