WARRINGTON Town suffered their first defeat of the season as they were humbled 4-0 at home by Curzon Ashton.
Alex Curran opened the scoring on the break on 12 minutes, and as the Yellows chased the game, Curzon added three in the final 15 minutes to become the first visiting team to score four at the newly re-named GXO Stadium since Curzon last did it in August 2023.
Coming in to the game off the back of a 5-0 win over Whitby Town on Saturday, much was expected by the home crowd but they were well and truly brought back down to earth with a bump.
Curzon controlled large parts of the game, even if chances were at a premium.
Their opening goal came when Lewis Earl’s misplaced pass in midfield was hooked forward, and with the Yellows defence on half way, Curran raced through and slotted it underneath Mateusz Hewelt.
Shortly after Evan Gumbs had crucially intercepted Brad Holmes’ ball across the box, the Yellows lost his centre-half partner Alex McNally, replaced by Callum Edwards which forced a reshuffle.
The visitors ended the first half with their only real other chance, Harvey Roberts drilling a shot goalwards from 25-yards that was palmed wide by Hewelt.
A response was expected from the Yellows, and though they enjoyed more possession, they found it difficult to break Curzon down.
It was Curzon who created the next shot on target, Harvey Hayhurst’s left-footed free kick from the right edge of the box beaten out by Hewelt.
Even the introduction of Ewan Bange failed to create much in the way of goalmouth action for the Yellows, although fellow sub Reuben Denton did go agonisingly close to diverting a right-wing cross home from Edwards.
But minutes later, the game was all but done. A poor pass by Earl was intercepted by Curran in midfield and he drove forward, played it through for Roberts and he slotted past Hewelt.
Curzon rubbed salt in the wound late on, substitute Olu Lawal squeezing the ball home at the near post after more good work by Curran, before Lawal capped off a fine performance with a spectacular overhead kick in injury time.
Warrington Town are at home again on Saturday, against newly-promoted Emley.
