WHEN a young child arrived at Bright Horizons Warrington Day Nursery and Pre-School Nursery with a serious medical condition, practitioners went above and beyond to ensure that Ibbie – and her parents – received the best possible experience, despite the challenges.
Ibbi has hyperinsulinism, a rare condition which causes her pancreas to produce too much insulin, which leads to abnormally high blood insulin levels and low blood sugar.
Nursery manager Becky explained: ‘Ibbie’s transition to nursery was filled with worry and concern due to the nature of her condition.
‘When we learned that the family had nominated one of our colleagues, Abi, for a Hyperinsulinism Hero award from the Children’s Hyperinsulinism Charity we were thrilled.’
Ibbie’s parents, Gavin and Joanne, visited Bright Horizons Warrington to present the award to Abi and told the team that they were full of gratitude for the support that she gives Ibbie and the positive impact that this has had on their family.
The parents recently visited Parliament to raise support for Rare4Schools, a framework they’ve written to help schools and educational institutions better understand and support children living with congenital hyperinsulinism. Their goal is to increase awareness and drive meaningful change in how rare conditions are approached in education settings.
Becky said: “Abi’s recognition is a proud moment for our team. Her commitment to Ibbie’s care reflects the values we hold dear – partnership, compassion and excellence. We’re thrilled to see her honoured in this way. The award is a testament not only to Abi’s professionalism, but also to the compassion and dedication she and the whole team display every day.
Starting nursery was full of worry for this family due to Ibbie’s health care needs, but the fact that her parents took the time to nominate Abi reflects the real difference their care has made.
Ibbie’s parents, Gavin and Joanne, said: ‘From the beginning, Abi has demonstrated a remarkableunderstanding of Ibbie’s medical needs and her emotional well-being. We have witnessed the trust Ibbie places in Abi, responding to her reminders and guidance with a comfort that only a truly special caregiver can inspire.’
