WARRINGTON Wolves’ chances of reaching the Super League play-offs took another hit as they were beaten 24-18 by champions Wigan.
Leading 8-6 at half time, Sam Burgess’ side had hope of nabbing an unlikely win to breathe life in to their top six hopes, but they remain four points behind Wakefield, and likely five points off the play-off places if Hull beat depleted Salford as expected at the weekend.
They perhaps didn’t open up as much of a lead as they ought to have in a first half where Josh Thewlis gave them a 14th minute lead, and after Brad O’Neill had pulled one back for Wigan, Joe Philbin had a try ruled out for a forward pass by Toby King.
A Marc Sneyd penalty was the difference between the sides at half-time, but Wigan took the lead when Jack Farrimond crossed within three minutes of the restart.
George Williams scored against his former club to return the favour, but a costly spell of three tries in 16 minutes swung the game in Wigan’s favour. Liam Farrell and Zach Eckersley crossed, before Farrimond’s second rendered Jake Thewlis’ late try scant consolation.
