WARRINGTON’S first citizen, Mayor Cllr. Mo Hussain was joined by the town’s first Womble for a “Mayoral Solstice litter pick” at the weekend.

The Mayor believes strongly in practical public service – including litter picking as he teamed up with volunteers from the town’s Litter Network.

Together with eight teams of volunteers, they cleaned up the heart of Warrington. The pre-set routes included Bank Park, Bank Quay, parts of Howley, Whitecross, Latchford, Bewsey, Dallam, Fairfield and most of Orford Lane.
A total of 104 volunteers were prebooked on Eventbrite, including many regular litter volunteers and strong contingents from both the Hong Kong Community and Warrington Sea Cadets.
In just two hours these 8 teams collected an incredible 127 bags of litter. The Aluminium drink cans will be recycled to raise money to support the Orford Veterans Hub charity.
The event was captured by an overhead drone from David McCollom of DMC. Mobile First Aid cover was provided by Merseyside and Cheshire Blood Bikes but there were no untoward incidents.
The volunteers finished with refreshments and food at Bank Park Pavilion, arranged by Mo Hussain and AK’s Kitchen.
Cllr. Hussain said: “Absolutely amazing! Keeping the town clean and raising money for a fantastic cause.”
Organiser Tony Dixon added:“We are delighted with Mo’s appointment. We are hoping people will take pride in a cleaner town. We aim to raise public expectations and at the same time to modify public behaviour.
“Something very good is happening here in Warrington. We have already established a local movement and we want to be the cleanest major town in the North West.
“The Mayoral pick was our “deepest clean” of the town centre so far. It was another step on our journey and yes there is more to come”.
Warrington’s Litter Volunteers hold regular litter picks on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and most Sundays.
Litterpicking benefits the environment and can boost physical and mental well-being.
