WARRINGTON Wolves suffered a Wembley hangover as they ended up being well-beaten by in-form Leeds Rhinos 36-12 at Headingley.
Warrington held their own in a tight first half, with both teams missing try-scoring chances, but the home side, looking for their fifth straight win on the bounce, edged it 8-0 at the break, thanks to a try from Cameron Smith and a conversion and penalty from Jake Connor.
The Wolves went close through Josh Thewliss and Paul Vaughan but couldn’t find a way through the home side’s resolute defence.
But the Wolves collapsed early in the second half as the Rhinos took a stranglehold on the game.
Smith added another and tries from Brodie Croft, Tom Holroyd, Connor and Morgan Gannon ensured they stayed in touch with the top two Hull Kingston Rovers and Wigan Warriors.
A spirited try from Jake Thewlis had given Warrington brief hope and Ben Currie added a late consolation score. Meanwhile, Marc Sneyd’s two conversions saw him overhaul former Wigan star Andy Farrell to go third in the all-time Super League kickers’ list with 1,027 goals.
WSarrington appeared to run out of steam after their heart-breaking Wembley defeat last weekend.
