Support for carers

A carer is anyone who cares for someone (like a family member or friend) who is ill, disabled, is experiencing addition or has mental health concerns, and is not paid by a company or the council to do so. The council’s 2024 carers survey found that:

  • 70.7% of carers have only rarely had a break from their caring roles in the last 12 months
  • 74.5% of carers provided support for one person, with 20% of carers supporting two people
  • Over a third of carers (35%) said that their caring role had a huge impact on their finances

In Warrington, there are a number support services available that can help support carers with some of the challenges they face. Unpaid carers may also be eligible for national support such as Carer’s Allowance or carers leave, and local support from Warrington Carers Hub and national support from charity Carers UK provides lots of information on what help is available to you.
Cllr Maureen McLaughlin, cabinet member for health, wellbeing and social care, said: “Unpaid carers play a crucial and important role in supporting people in Warrington. While Carers Week is just one week out of the year that allows us to highlight the disadvantages carers face and celebrate the work they do, it’s important to remember that support is available year-round for carers.
“I’d encourage carers to get involved with the events taking place this week, where they are able, to not only enjoy a break from caring responsibilities but to also give themselves a moment to learn more about the support they may be eligible for.”
