VIDEO: A swan trapped in a canal lock at Warrington for several days has been safely rescued by the RSPCA.

A passerby reported the swan as being stuck inside the lock, on Thelwall New Road near Grappenhall, for several days, and was swimming anxiously up and down beside the lock gate and unable to escape.

RSPCA Animal Rescue Officer (ARO) Steve Wickham and Inspector Anthony Joynes, from the charity’s Specialist Rescue Team attended and, using a raft, carefully reached the swan before lifting him to safety and carrying him out of the lock.
Steve Wickham, ARO, said: “The poor swan appeared distressed and had likely been trapped there for a number of days. Although there looked to be enough room for him to fly out, his behaviour suggested he either couldn’t or didn’t feel able to escape safely.”
Inspector Anthony Joynes added: “Thankfully, after a careful rescue, we were able to safely release the swan away from the lock so he could continue on his way.”
