Warrington-based national social care charity Making Space has been awarded the prestigious Investing in Volunteers (IiV) accreditation, the UK’s gold standard for volunteer management.
The nationally recognised award reflects Making Space’s ongoing commitment to valuing, supporting and involving volunteers in meaningful ways across its services. With over 65 volunteers supporting people across the country – including at Warrington’s Connect Hub and dementia cafés – the charity says the accreditation marks an important milestone in strengthening its volunteer programme.
Rachel Peacock, CEO of Making Space, said: “Volunteers are the heartbeat of our charity. Their selfless dedication enables us to make a real difference, and we simply couldn’t do it without them. This award is a testament to the commitment across our whole organisation to ensure every volunteer feels welcomed, supported and truly valued.”
Making Space’s journey toward accreditation began in early 2024 and involved volunteers, staff, managers and trustees from across its services. Assessors praised the charity’s inclusive approach, strong communication and the impact volunteers have in local communities.
Toni Pike, National Volunteers Co-ordinator at Making Space, said: “This has been such a valuable opportunity to pause and listen to the voices of our volunteers and staff. We’re proud of how far we’ve come and excited to keep building a programme that’s inclusive, flexible, and truly makes a difference.”
The announcement comes during Volunteers’ Week (2–8 June), a UK-wide campaign celebrating the vital contribution of volunteers to communities and causes. Making Space will be marking the occasion at its annual Volunteer Celebration Event on 4 June at Doncaster Racecourse.
With a growing range of opportunities across Warrington and beyond, from peer support and befriending to helping with activities, admin or fundraising, the charity is calling on more local people to consider getting involved.
“Many of our volunteers have used their own experiences to support others,” Toni added. “They make a huge difference – and in turn gain new skills, confidence and connections. We’re always looking to welcome more people into our community.”
