The pair arrived at Warrington Animal Welfare on Slutchers Lane after being dropped off by a man claiming to have found them near to the fire station on Winwick Road.
The Terrier who has since been named Fred is estimated to be around 10 years old, and is said to be in the worst state of matting the centre has ever seen. Staff said: “His bottom is red raw. Years of neglect have left his fur a solid mass, causing severe discomfort”.
The Chihuahua, now named Barney and is around 7 years old, is also in poor health with both dogs needing urgent dental treatment and Barney in particular requiring surgery for a retained testicle.
Staff say “Both dogs were filthy and smelled horrific, leading us to believe they’ve been living outdoors in squalid conditions for a very long time. Despite their neglect, Fred and Barney are sweet but understandably nervous. It’s heart-breaking to think about the life they must have endured.”
“We need your help! Do you recognise these dogs or know where they might have come from? This is a heart-breaking case of cruelty, and any information you can provide could help us identify their previous circumstances and bring those responsible to justice.”
Both dogs require extensive veterinary treatment, including dentals, grooming, and surgery. Warrington Animal Welfare is appealing for donations to help cover these costs – every little bit makes a difference. To donate:
