More snow fall brings traffic disruption

WARRINGTON is under another yellow Met Office weather warning for snow and ice which ends later this morning as more snow fell overnight blocking paths and roads across the town and bringing misery for commuters.

The alert, which expires at 10am on Tuesday, January 7, warns that icy stretches are expected to develop due to ongoing wet surfaces following rain on Monday and, in places, snowmelt.

It says: “Keep yourself and your family safe when it is icy. Plan to leave the house at least five minutes earlier than normal. Not needing to rush reduces your risk of accidents, slips and falls.
“If you need to make a journey on foot, try to use pavements along main roads which are likely to be less slippery. Similarly, if cycling, try and stick to main roads which are more likely to have been treated.
“Snowy, wintry weather can cause delays and make driving conditions dangerous. Keep yourself and others safe by planning your route, give yourself extra time for your journey. Check for road closures or delays to public transport and amend plans if necessary.
“If driving, make sure you have some essentials in your car in the event of delays (eg warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, a torch, ice scraper/deicer, a warning triangle, high visibility vest and an in-car phone charger.”
Flood warnings issued on Monday, January 6 for several areas of Warrington remain in force, although water levels are believed to be now dropping.

Warrington has faced a week of poor weather with floods hitting during the New Year. It saw the Bridgewater Canal breach near Lymm and homes being cut off and hard hit by flooding in Dallam and Bewsey. Electricity supplies were also cut off, adding to the misery for residents.
Temperatures in the town will only reach 2C today, according to forecasters, but with the windchill it will feel much colder (-3C at times). It will remain cold on Wednesday and for much of the week in the town, according to the current forecast. But no more snow is currently predicted this week.
Traffic was brought to a standstill on London Road, Stockton Heath, this morning during the school run.
