Northern Lights light up Warrington

RESIDENTS in Warrington experienced a stunning multicolour visual display in the night skies as the Northern Lights danced above the town.

The spectacular visual display is usually limited to dark sky areas or rural areas which are free of light pollution.

But on Thursday night, the pink, red and green lights were visible across parts of the UK. It was helped by clear skies and cooler weather which made it easier to witness the phenomena.
The aurora borealis was visible as far south as London and across towns and cities across the UK as a result of the solar storm.

The Met Office explained that this “incredible occurrence can be occasionally seen in the night sky over Britain.”
The lights appear in shades including pale green, pink, red, yellow, blue and violet in the direction of due north.
They generally extend from 50 miles above the earth’s surface to as high as 400 miles.

The northern lights occur as a consequence of solar activity and result from collisions of charged particles in the solar wind colliding with molecules in the earth’s upper atmosphere.
Although difficult to fully experience with the naked eye, the colour intensity of the lights can be enhanced by looking at them through a camera or mobile phone camera.
Met Office spokesperson Stephen Dixon said: “In terms of cloud cover overnight, there are relatively clear skies for much of the UK, so there is a decent chance of visibility.”
It’s the second time this year the Northern Lights have been visible in Warrington, the last time being in May.
