UPDATED: THE M62 near Warrington has now fully re-opened after being closed for much of the day after a pedestrian sadly died after being struck by a car during the early hours resulting in the arrest of a 25-year-old man.
At around 12.15 a.m. on Tuesday 19 September 2023, officers were called to a road traffic collision involving a car and a pedestrian on the M62 between Birchwood (Junction 11) and Eccles.
Emergency services attended the scene, and sadly an adult male was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 25-year-old man who remained at the scene was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has been taken to custody for further questioning.
Enquiries are ongoing at this stage.
The M62 between Eccles and Birchwood was closed in both directions for much of the day while officers conducted their investigations.
North West Motorway Police led the response to the serious collision which was first reported to National Highways at 00:15. Due to the nature of this incident, the carriageway was closed in both directions.
National Highways provided resources in attendance to assist with traffic management and traffic caught within the closure was released from the rear of the queue.
The incident resulted in traffic delays across Warrington during the early morning school run traffic and much of the day in the Culcheth and Glazebury areas of the town and on the A57 Manchester Road at Woolston. Traffic was also impacted on the M56 and around much of Warrington.
