Police issue further warning after Fiddlers Ferry Urban Explorers end up covered in asbestos

LOCAL police have issued a further warning about the dangers of entering the decommissioned Fiddlers Ferry Power Station site at Penketh – after five Urban Explorers end up covered in asbestos.

The five males, who had entered a boiler house where there had been a “massive asbestos drop” ended up covered in asbestos and now face the risk of deadly asbestosis later on in life.

Shut down for over two years and since the management knew it was for decommissioning police say no money has been spent on upkeep, so anything that would normally be maintained has not been. The boiler house had a massive asbestos drop and is now only entered by one person each morning fully kitted up with all PPE, including full fitted breathing apparatus. They enter with a meter that measures the asbestos in the air.

Posting a warning on social media, Penketh and Cuerdley police said: “Five males entered the boiler house urban exploring, security phoned the police who attended but were told they could not enter the building for the obvious reasons.
“The officer and staff had to wait for the five male urban explorers to exit the building. The five males were covered in asbestos as they had been on a thorough exploration of the boiler house and explored the main area of the asbestos drop. Nobody could go near them and they were told to go home strip outside put the clothes into a bin bag, shower and get to A&E.
“These males will probably end up with asbestosis in later life.
“This hobby of Urban Exploring is an extreme sport if you will and can end with serious consequences!”
Work preparing for the demolition of the main buildings and towers is ongoing, with the first towers expected to be demolished later this year – and in three stages.
