How to encourage your kids to consider tech as a career

It’s no secret that a career in tech has a lot of advantages. It’s a dynamic industry that attracts lots of investment, which in turn means the salaries are very healthy.  So, if your child shows promising talent in skills such as data analytics and problem solving, it may be worth exploring this option with them.

If they enjoy activities in this field, they’re likely to flourish and get a great introduction to a career path in tech. Here’s how you can help introduce the subject to them.

Why go for a career in tech?

Tech is booming – and there are no signs of it slowing down. Within this sector, there are a range of different career paths with very generous salary packages which means there are great prospects for your kids. There is a huge push to get more women into tech too, making it a great option if you have girls.

You can also make a real difference, with many tech roles supporting life-changing projects across the world. This includes healthcare, sustainability, charitable causes and more.

How to approach it

For many, a career in tech may feel out of reach, particularly if you aren’t introduced to it until later in life. However, by making your kids aware of it from a young age, this means they can figure out early on whether they enjoy the elements that a career in tech promises.

The most important thing is to encourage your kids to have fun with it. You don’t want to alienate or overload them because ultimately, their interests and future career is entirely down to them. That doesn’t mean you can’t have fun along the way with problem-solving activities and introducing them to cool hobbies and equipment that will simultaneously build a core skill base. Future employers will love examples of you integrating your future passions into your current hobbies.

Get adult influencers on board

Know any adults in the tech sector who love what they do? It’s always valuable to speak to someone established in an industry you may be interested in, so why not encourage a light-hearted conversation between your kids and someone in the field? Perhaps there’s a teacher at school that can offer valuable information and encouragement too.

Otherwise, there are plenty of idols on sites such as YouTube who may spark some inspiration. By seeing someone they admire, particularly if they’re closer in age, this may give kids the confidence to take those crucial steps into embarking on a career in tech in the future.
