Campaigners call on council to scrap low traffic schemes as car fire creates gridlock at Latchford

CAMPAIGNERS are again calling on Warrington council to scrap the controversial Central 6 low traffic schemes after a car fire caused gridlock at Latchford and the surrounding area during the early evening rush hour.

As firefighters tackled the car blaze outside the Latchford Medical centre, traffic came to a standstill the full length of Knutsford Road along with gridlock on other roads in the area. The incident was close to the junction of Grange Avenue – the road that has been controversially blocked off with unsightly planters.

Rachael Harper from the Warrington Residents Opposition to the Central 6 Street Plan group said: “The scenes around Westy and Latchford tonight were just unbelievable and I’m not just talking about the car on fire.

“Traffic was at a standstill and people were having to abandon their cars. Indeed I heard of an incident from one angry resident who had to abandon his car to get to his wife who was upset by the whole incident. Luckily there were no reports of any injuries as far as we know, but one thing tonight is abundantly clear; it is time for Warrington Borough Council to act and end this ridiculous street plan.

“Not only does it not do what it says on the tin; decrease traffic and prevent pollution (just pushing it to other areas). Now it has been proven to be impractical too, especially when incidents such as this occur. We have been telling the council for weeks that if they’d have worked with residents from the start then they could have pointed out the flaws with this scheme. But instead of acting on major concerns received, the council has fobbed people off telling them they are listening, engaging, and communicating.

“Tonight more than ever highlights why actions speak louder than words so Warrington Borough council over to you; what are you going to do about this???
Rachael added: “Reminder, anyone who feels strongly about stopping these plans needs to join us for the Protest March on the 23rd July 2pm at Orford Park. We need the council to see just how many people are angry and affected by this.”

  1. Warrington is rapidly heading towards a dictatorship with WBC paying no heed to the wishes and concerns of the residents. Unless they act now to reverse this ridiculous scheme there will be a significant change in the WBC exec come the next elections. tonight’s incident could have resulted in loss of life due to the disregard for public input and concerns.

  2. I dread to think what would have happened if the emergency services wouldn’t have been able to get there on time due to the gridlock. It just doesn’t bear thinking about.
