Late collapse sends Wolves to heavy defeat in France

A SECOND half collapse saw Warrington Wolves well beaten 40-8 by Catalans Dragons in Perpignan.

Daryl Powell’s side were level at 6-6 at half time, and only trailed 14-8 with 15 minutes left before a late flurry from the hosts.

It now means they have conceded 40 points in back-to-back Super League games.

The pre-match build-up saw rumours that the Wolves had been delayed on their chartered flight but they started the game well.

Connor Wrench, who started on the wing with Josh Thewlis at full-back and Stefan Ratchford in the halves, gave them the lead after Sam Tomkins had scored an early penality.

Peter Mata’utia kicked the goal and Warrington led 6-2.

Catalans had a try ruled out for a knock on before Tom Davies touched down from Tyrone May’s pass on 23 minutes in what would turn out to be the final points of the first half despite the Dragons putting Warrington under pressure.

The returning Tomkins added an early penalty to make it 8-6 and then chased down Wrench on 70 metre break to save a try at the other end.

A high tackle on Thewlis enabled Mata’utia to level things up at 8-all, but that would prove to be the last time they troubled the scorers.

Mitchell Pearce put Catalans back in front, converted by Tomkins, shortly before the hour.

But after Tomkins added his third penalty of the evening on 65 minutes, Warrington fell apart.

Julian Bousquet crossed for a try from close range before two players Warrington have been linked with signing, Sam Kasiano and Gil Dudson, linked up to put Dudson over.

Kasiano then put Fouad Yaha over in the corner, and Yaha set up Arthur Mourgue in the final minute for their sixth try and Warrington’s seventh league defeat of the season.
