A Tory candidate standing in the Warrington Borough Council Local Elections who apologised for tweeting support for far-right activist Tommy Robinson, has now been suspended from the party after another tweet came to light.

Stephen Chadwick, who was chosen to contest the Lymm North Seat, was suspended from the party last night, after another tweet came to light from February last year when he tweeted the Good Morning Britain programme stating:

“At what point will you turn around and admit Tommy Robinson has been talking complete and utter sense regarding these Islamic problems? How many more people need to be hurt or killed.”

After standing by him following a tweet in May 2019 promoting Robinson’s campaign website, saying he had become a registered supporter, Conservative HQ moved quickly to suspend him.
A Conservative spokesperson said: “Mr Chadwick has been suspended pending an investigation. As a party we will not tolerate racism of any form.
“While his name will still be on the ballot paper because it is too late to withdraw, we have withdrawn all support for him as a party and will not be endorsing him.”

When the initial tweet came to light Mr Chadwick said: “Everybody who knows me, knows that I do not share the views of far-right political groups. My post was a misjudgement on my part and one which I now regret and apologise for.”
“I am campaigning to improve road safety across the region after my son was involved in an accident and care passionately about such things as the green belt, education and mending potholes, issues which matter to me and my friends and neighbours.
“I am not a politician I am just someone who wants to do the right thing for their community, which is the reason why I am standing for the Conservatives in next month’s local elections.”
