Warrington involved in Super League’s first draw under new system

NINETY minutes wasn’t enough to separate Hull FC and Warrington Wolves on Sunday afternoon.

Jake Mamo’s dramatic try on the hooter enabled Gareth Widdop to convert to level things up at 14-all and send the game to golden point extra time.

Neither side could find a breakthrough in the two five-minute extra periods, so had to settle for the first draw since Super League introduced the golden point system.

The bookmakers couldn’t call this before the match and it proved to be as close as they anticipated, with just four points shared equally in a tight first half.

Former Wire full-back Brett Hodgson has enjoyed an encouraging start as Hull coach, while the Wolves were uninspiring in victory over Swinton in the cup last week.

It took 25 minutes of the first half for either side to trouble the scorers, Hull’s Marc Sneyd converting a penalty moments after Josh Charnley thought he had snared an interception.

After Stefan Ratchford had made it 2-2 at half time, it was Hull who scored the first try of the game on 56 minutes through Jake Connor.

The lead was short lived, Daryl Clark’s offload putting Chris Hill over and Ratchford converted for 8-8.

With 10 minutes to go, Hull once again hit the front through Carlos Tuimavave, though a Sneyd drop goal attempt to put the game beyond Warrington missed and left the door open.

And with the very last play of normal time, Mamo evaded his man and kept his balance to beat the full back to score a fine solo score, coming inside enough to ensure Widdop had a relatively straight forward conversion to tie things up.

Blake Austin missed two drop goal attempts either side of one from Sneyd in the first extra time period, and both players failed again with an attempt each in the second period as the points were shared.
