Two wins in a day for Warrington Wolves

WARRINGTON Wolves recorded two wins in one day as they saw off Huddersfield Giants 19-12 at the Totally Wicked Stadium in St Helens.

After Salford had forfeited the original game, and the Wolves were handed a 24-0 win, the Giants were drafted in as opponents and Steve Price’s men made it a double victory.

The Wolves hadn’t played for a fortnight and were made to wait even longer, with an accident on the M62 delaying Huddersfield’s arrival.

They dominated the early exchanges and led through Daryl Clark’s seventh minute try, but were otherwise frustrated – Gareth Widdop having a try disallowed and both Ben Currie and Josh Charnley were held up over the line.

Huddersfield made them pay, a mistake by Anthony Gelling gifting a try to Jake Wardle, with Aiden Sezer’s conversion levelling the scores at 6-6 – though Stefan Ratchford’s penalty gave the Wolves a two-point advantage at half-time.

The Giants took the lead early in the second half through James Gavet, but it was shortlived – Clark scoring his second try six minutes later and Ratchford’s conversion made it 14-12.

Gelling made up for his earlier error with Warrington’s third try on the hour and Huddersfield’s job was made tougher when they lost Sezer to the sin-bin with eight minutes to play, before Widdop’s drop goal made sure.

Warrington: Ratchford, Thewlis, Gelling, King, Charnley, Austin, Widdop, Hill, D Clark, Cooper, Currie, Hughes, J Clark. Subs: Philbin, Murdoch-Masila, Davis, Walker.

Huddersfield: Golding, McGillvary, Wardle, Cudjoe, McIntosh, Gaskell, Sezer, Ta’ai, Moore, Hewitt, McQueen, Wardle, Lawrence. Subs: English, Wilson, Turner, Gavet.
