St Roccos Lantern Walk a massive success

A LANTERN WALK for children and their families in aid of St. Rocco’s boasts an excellent turnout as a huge crowd gathered at the Orford Park Jubilee hub for a procession around a 1 mile course.

Approximately 1000 walkers took part including 400 Children, many in fancy dress, who carried a vast array of lanterns, glowing windmills and fairy lights as they completed their sponsored walk. The weather, which was so foul during the morning, was kind and the rain and wind stayed away.

On hand to help with the rhythm of the night were a Samba band who drummed the entire distance and keeping the children entertained were characters including a stormtrooper, Bananaman, Iggle Piggle, Bob the minion and St. Rocco’s own mascot Rocco. Music, entertainment, food and a funfair made it a wonderful night for the kids and grown ups alike.

The Lantern Walk is a fun way for younger members of the community to raise funds to help St. Rocco’s to look after people with life-limiting illnesses in Warrington. St. Rocco’s offers care and support for patients and families in a number of ways, including their Inpatient Unit and Vitality Centre as well as through the Hospice at Home and Family Support services. They rely on the local community for over 75% of their funding, so the Lantern Walk is a great way to support your local Hospice.

Around 100 volunteers gave up their time to support the event, setting up, registering the walkers, acting as marshals along the route and handing out medals at the end including the new Chairman of the Charity, Archdeacon Roger Preece.

Last year the event raised over £18,000 and it is hoped that this year can top even that fantastic sum.
