Worry over “invisible” child cyclists

POLICE and local councillors are becoming increasingly concerned about the number of children in the Culcheth area riding bikes without lights at night.
Often they are also wearing dark clothing and are, effectively, “invisible” to motorists.
Culcheth and Glazebury parish councillor Ileyne Hutchinson (pictured) said: “I am very concerned at the number of reports being received by councillors and the police that many local children out riding their bikes after dark are doing so while wearing dark clothing and with no lights displayed.
“A number of motorists have described how they have come close to colliding with these young cyclists coming at them out of the darkness.”
The parish council and police are asking that parents take all possible steps to ensure their children wear bright clothing and display lights after dark.
Local police officers will be speaking to cyclists where they see that they are a danger not only to other road users but also to themselves.
Their message to youngsters is: “Don’t be invisible.”
