Councillor calls for permanent solution to Silver Lane travellers problem

CROFT Parish Councillor Val Allen says she will be looking to meet with the relevant parties to secure a long-term solution to the problem with travellers using the Silver Lane site.

Travellers returned to the site recently, despite the installation of a barrier last August to attempt to solve the problem.

The issue was referenced in a statement calling for residents to support the Look of our Villages campaign across Culcheth, Glazebury and Croft.

Val said: “One of our biggest problems is litter. We employ caretakers for our villages to pick up other people’s litter.

“I am sure that residents would much prefer us to spend their money on other services.

“Like other residents I am also concerned that Silver Lane is still being used by Travellers, this is despite a barrier being put in place.

“Again, the lock has been removed and I will be looking to have a meeting with Biffa, the Security Company and Warrington Borough Council to secure a more permanent solution.”

The Look of our Villages campaign is being backed by the Conservative Councillor team in Culcheth, Glazebury and Croft, led by Parish Councillors Val and Keith Bland in Culcheth.

In a statement, the pair also said: “We intend to tackle the main causes of complaint from residents and its usually something we see ourselves when we walk through our streets dog fouling, litter, fly tipping, graffiti to name a few.

“We will be working with all local responsible agencies and residents to make sure Culcheth, Glazebury and Croft retain the kind of look we all want to see when travelling through the villages we love.

“We will also be out tackling some of these issues head on in our streets with our Look of our Villages Campaign.”

  1. Seems like an never ending battle at Silver Lane but surely the solution is simple. An expensive barrier has been put up and other attempts to try and stop them but still they do it by cutting through the locks or however they gain access. So put a sign up too, if there isn’t already one, saying exactly WHY the barrier is there and if anyone ignore sand goes beyond it and park up they will be charged with trespass, unauthorised access, breaking and entering or whatever is relevant and on the spot fined heavily or better still maybe even have their cars/vans/caravans immediately towed away and compounded. Obviously it would have to be worded better than that but I just can’t see why it’s not possible. The Liasion Officers could also advise them that they ARE SIMPLY NOT ALLOWED THERE and if they do continue then Liaison wont be able support them and get them out of the mess they will be in.

  2. Until there is an allocated site in Warrington any attempt to prosecute the travellers for illegal camping will be easily defended. If there was an allocated site the travellers would have no excuse to camp elsewhere.
