A 65-year-old Lymm man who has suffered from asthma since he was a baby is to run the London Marathon for the third time – in aid of Asthma UK.
John Bamforth will join 300 other people running to raise money for the charity in the race on Sunday, April 24, hoping to raise £525,000.
John has run the London Marathon twice previously in aid of the RNIB, completing it in four hours.
He completed the Manchester Marathon last Sunday.
John’s personal target for the London Marathon is £2,000.
He said: “I have had asthma since I was a baby and I remember sitting on my grandmother’s knee having great difficulty breathing.
“As a young child I frequently used to wake up at night having asthma attacks. As a result of asthma in my early years my lung capacity has been severely impaired.
“I have benefitted greatly from the development of asthma medication overmany years and this has helped me in sporting activities and my everyday life. Without the medication now available I could not have lived my life as fully as I now enjoy it.
“I’m running for Asthma UK as I believe they have been instrumental in bringing asthma to the attention of the general public, and catalysing research into new and better treatments. I have completed two London Marathons for the RNIB in four hours and I want to do it one last time as I’ve reached retirement age.”
Asthma UK funds world-leading research to find better treatments and ultimately a cure for asthma, which is desperately needed as tragically every day the lives of three families are devastated by the death of a loved one to an asthma attack. Research shows that two thirds of asthma deaths are preventable.
