Ton up for Warrington Town in away win at Cables

SKIPPER Ciaran Kilheeney scored Warrington Town’s 100th league goal of the season in a 3-0 win at Prescot Cables as they-re-wrote the record books.

The Town captain notched his 29th and 30th league goals of the season in a routine away win for Stuart Mellish’s run away league leaders, with Northwich Victoria dropping more points in a 2-2 draw at Trafford, following their midweek dfeat by Scarborough.

The win maintains Town’s 16 point lead at the top of the table with seven games to play as they created a new club record of 28 league wins and number of goals scored in a season.

Perennial strugglers Prescot Cables have been much improved this season and were comfortably perched in mid-table before this one.

They started brightly, and captain James McCulloch will have wanted to do better with a free header from the game’s first corner on three minutes.

Town were struggling to get hold of the ball in midfield on a heavy pitch, and striker Steven Gillespie was restricted to two half chances shortly before the 20 minute mark after good work from Gerard Kinsella.

The visitors started to impose themselves on the match and they took the lead with their first attempt on target on 26 minutes.

Ally Brown’s high awkward cross from the right was met by Kinsella, who rose highest in the box and glanced his header inside the far post.

The hosts weren’t causing Warrington’s back line, including Phil Dean deputising at left back, any real problems, and they nearly grabbed a second on the break when goalkeeper Marcus Burgess was forced to use his head as Kilheeney chased down a long ball.

The killer blow came on the stroke of half time. Kilheeney picked the ball up midway through Prescot’s half, played a clever one-two with Scott Metcalfe and then guided it in to the back of the net beautifully with the outside of his right foot.

That made it 2-0, and in doing so brought up a century of goals for Warrington in the league this season.

Prescot sought an early second half goal to get back in the contest. Joe Nicholson took on a quick throw and carried it in to the box, smartly beating his man by rolling the ball across his body but then blazed high and wide with his left foot.

Former Warrington wideman Phil Bannister was similarly wayward with a shot from a good position five minutes later, before Town almost made it 3-0 through Kilheeney.

The third goal eventually came with nine to play. Kilheeney cut inside and had his shot smartly stopped, and as substitute Chris Gahgan went to bury the rebound, he was brought down inside the area for a penalty.

The home fans accused Gahgan, who had taken a heavy first touch, of making the most of it, but Kilheeney wasn’t stopping to ask questions, and stepped up and converted the penalty with no mistake.

Town closed out the contest to register their 28th win from 35 league matches ahead of next Saturday’s tricky trip to Lancaster.
