Town's growth strategy approved

TOWN Hall chiefs have finally approved “Warrington Means Business” – the borough council’s programme for business growth and regeneration of the borough.
The document was first presented in draft form to the council’s executive board in November last year and has subsequently gone out for consultation.
Leader of the council Cllr Terry O’Neill (pictured) said: “I am proud to endorse and support Warrington Means Business.
“It provides a comprehensive framework that sets out the methodology and intent to drive, progress, encourage and facilitate future business growth in the town.
“It is a live working document which reflects the current status, plans, opportunities and aspiration and desire to maximise Warrington’s potential.
“We are at the start of a new journey for our town. Warrington will soon be a place transformed with our waterfront revealed, the town centre revitalised, our parks and green spaces given new leases of life, our transport and supportive connectivity infrastructures in place and our local people with access to top class education, skills and training.
“Warrington Means Business is our map to take us on that journey.”
In fact, only two responses were received to the draft document – one from Cheshire Wildlife Trust and one from FCC Environment (UK).
They centred on concerns associated with the sustainability of Moore Nature Reserve and consultation relating to land in private ownership.
As a result, the document has been amended to highlight the fact that the layout and route of the road network will be designed to minimise impact in areas of wildlife and ecology value.
It has also been updated to reflect progress made since November last year, specifically in relation to the timeline and Omega.
The document reflects Warrington’s position as the largest population centre outside Great Manchester and Merseyside in the North West – more than 200,000 – and the largest urban centre…bigger than Chester, Crewe and Macclesfield combined.
It highlights the council’s proposals for the town centre, including rediscovering the town’s water front, business growth sites such as Omega, Lingley Mere, Gemini, Birchwood Park and Woolston Grange, housing areas, cultural developments, etc.
The Warrington Means Business growth and regeneration strategy will require revenue funding and access to funds via the council’s capital programme.
Business cases will be developed for each development requiring funding.
