EFFORTS to find a cure for a debilitating disease have been given a major boost thanks to a £5,000 donation from a Warrington business.
Staff at Appleton-based Flextronics Global Services and Software (FGSS), were invited to choose a cause close to their hearts and pitch their charity to company bosses in order to win the donation.
Following the “Dragon’s Den” style competition, the charity Rett Syndrome Research Trust UK was awarded £5,000 to help it continue supporting people living with Rett Syndrome, a disorder which can cause severe physical and learning disabilities, typically striking young girls in their early years.
FGSS general manager Mike Meades said: “We’re very pleased to be backing the Rett Syndrome Research Trust UK as our charity of the year for 2013.
“All of our staff presentations were fantastic but the judging panel was really impressed with the charity’s plans for the future and felt that a £5,000 donation would make a big difference to their work, both locally and nationally.”
Flextronics employee Sharon Langhorne presented the winning pitch to FGSS management after she came across the charity during half time at a Warrington Wolves match and was inspired by its work with children.
Sharon said: “The charity were presented with a donation on the pitch for cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats and I wanted to find out more about them.
“I read how difficult it was for little girls and their families living with Rett Syndrome and it really struck a chord with me. I decided that I wanted to do something to help and I am so pleased to have won them this donation.”
Rachael Bloom, executive director of Rett Syndrome Research Trust UK, said: “We are honoured to have been chosen by Flextronics as their charity of the year.
“Much like Flextronics, we have a strong Warrington connection as one of our charity’s founders is from the area and two of our ambassadors, Lee Briers and Gareth O’Brien, play for Warrington Wolves. We’re really looking forward to working closely with them over the next 12 months.”
