A LAST gasp equaliser from substitute Phil Mooney against his former
club ensured Warrington Town earned a share of the points at table
topping Skelmersdale United in a thrilling 1-1 draw.
An 89th minute scrambled effort by United’s Mark Jackson looked to have broken Warrington’s hearts until Mooney, who only came on with five minutes to go struck in the third minute of injury time after fellow sub John Miles had his effort parried by the keeper.
It was as much as Warrington deserved, if not more, as they pushed the run away league leaders all the way.
In a tight first half Skelmersdale just about edged it with chances few and far between. But as the game progressed Warrington started to create some great chances, forcing the United keeper to make three fine saves.
Substitute Josh Hine, who guested for Town a few weeks ago, came off the bench for the home side and missed a one on one with the keeper as Andy Robertson pulled off a fine save at his feet.
But then with the clock ticking down Warrington failed to clear the ball properly and in a packed goal mouth Jackson slid the ball home.
To their credit Warrington didn’t let their heads dropped and forced United on to the back foot and as Miles saw his shot hit the post and bounce out Mooney struck from six yards to send the visiting fans into raptures.
Super sub Phil Mooney turns away after scoring against his former club and puts a smile on the faces of his team mates.
