New scout and guide centre

PLANS for a new Scout and Guide centre at Lymm have been unveiled – promising a super new community facility that will also be available to local groups and organisations.
The new centre will be built on the site of the existing 3rd Lymm Scout Group and Lymm District Guides headquarters in Pepper Street.
It will replace old buildings, originally a school meals kitchen dating from 1947.
The site is owned by the Scouts and Guides and over many years of fundraising, 40 per cent of the anticipated cost of the new building has been raised
Now applications are to be made to acquire grants to fund the rest of the cost.
Once built, the new centre will be shared by the Scouts and Guides during weekday evenings and occasional weekends but will also be available for use by other groups – possibly new organisations which don’t exist at present because of the lack of suitable accommodation.
Indoor bowls, afternoon tea dances, judo, kick boxing and perhaps a film club have been suggested.
A “buy a brick” campaign has recently been launched, with members of the public invited to buy or sponsor a red brick for £1 or a foundation blue brick for £5.
Beavers, Cubs and Scouts and Rainbows, Brownies and Guides throughout the village will be taking part in the campaign and it is hoped residents will rally round and help build the new centre within two years.
Spokesman Ray Banton said grant applications were more likely to succeed if the Scouts and Guides could demonstrate local support for the project, so local businesses were be asked if they could help in any way, either through provision of skills or materials.
Organisations would be asked to indicate they would like to use the facility once built.
Mr Banton said: “The centre will fulfil an urgent need for ‘purpose built’ modern facilities which the rapidly expanding village.”
Letters of support should be sent to Mr Banton at 10, Woodland Avenue, Lymm, WA13 0BJ
