THE fascinating history of aircraft crashes, accidents and incidents at RAF Burtonwood will be explored in the next free online lecture organised by the RAF Burtonwood Association.
The one-hour Zoom presentation, being organised by Association President Aldon Ferguson, will take place on Monday, September 14, 2026, at 7pm UK time.
RAF Burtonwood was the scene of literally hundreds of aircraft incidents between 1940 – even before the airfield was completed – and June 1968, when the final incident covered in the presentation involved a US Army Choctaw helicopter, 64232.
Fortunately, the vast majority of the incidents were not fatal, and the lecture will put them into context, emphasising that 99.9 per cent of flights to and from RAF Burtonwood were completed without incident.
The presentation will examine the wide variety of reasons behind the accidents, including adverse weather conditions, mechanical failures, pilot error and other circumstances.
It will also provide details of a large number of individual incidents, supported by numerous photographs and illustrations, offering an insight into an often overlooked aspect of the former airfield’s remarkable history.
RAF Burtonwood played a major role in the region’s aviation and military history for almost three decades, and the lecture promises to uncover some of the lesser-known stories behind the aircraft and personnel who passed through the airfield.
The free lecture is open to anyone interested in the history of RAF Burtonwood, aviation or the local area.
To reserve a free place, email Aldon Ferguson at aldonpf@aol.com. Confirmation of the booking will be sent, followed by a reminder during the weekend before the lecture.
The lecture takes place via Zoom on Monday, September 14 at 7pm UK time.
