WARRINGTON’S New Horizon’s School, which offers specialist education to vulnerable children, has been found to be “satisfactory” by Ofsted.
The school relocated to Fallowfield Grove, Padgate at the end of last year and an inspector spent two days at the school at the end of February.
She observed eight lessons and talked to staff, pupils, management, the local authority and a nearby high school as well. Overall the school was found to be satisfactory.
The Ofsted report states: “The school provides a safe environment and staff concern for students’ wellbeing in appreciated by parents and carers.”
“Students generally respond positively to staff and teaching is underpinned by a caring and supportive environment.”
Progress made by pupils during their time at the pupil referral unit (PRU) is closely monitored and over time is improving. Last year all students at the PRU achieved an English and maths grade at GCSE or equivalent alongside a wider range of awards.
Ofsted says the head provides inspirational and clear leadership and staff are unanimous in their support of her vision. Staff say they feel proud to work at the PRU and know what it is trying to achieve.
Headteacher Karen Thomson said: “We believe we have achieved a good deal of progress over the last year or so by having high expectations and prioritising learning, while at the same time providing a safe and caring environment.”
In the future the school will be looking to develop links with local colleges to strengthen its range of vocational qualifications.
The PRU is attended by children and young people aged 11-16 who are experiencing difficulties in the mainstream school system.
